Suffer Long vs. Long-Suffering

When people think of long-suffering, automatically they think of having to endure pain and hardship for an extensive period of time, and who wants to do that? However, long-suffering is defined as having or showing patience in spite of troubles, especially those caused by other people, and patiently enduring lasting offense or hardship. So yes, long-suffering has to do with enduring hardship, but it is focused on having the strength and patience that equips us to endure whatever it is that we are going through. So often we want our hardship to be over because we don’t like the feeling of going through it. However, there are many lessons to be learned on the journey of long-suffering. God wants us totally dependent upon Him. God wants to show us true love. God wants our heart. He may even be using us so that His glory can be revealed to others through us. 1 Peter 1:6-7 says, “In all this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. These have come so that the proven genuineness of your faith—of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire—may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed.” Therefore, even though we may be going through a period of long-suffering, our responsibility is to do good and live righteous. No matter how it may look to others. 1 Peter 2:15 tells us that “For it is God’s will that by doing good you should silence the ignorant talk of foolish people.” ‭‭Needless to say, everyone won’t understand the way God is having you to move on your journey. You can’t move by the will of others. God will give you the strength and endurance to be victorious if you completely trust Him in your journey. People may want to see you suffer long, but God has equipped you with long-suffering.
